China to push low-carbon transition in orderly manner, use coal to guara
China should see to it that coal plays the role of guaranteeing the country’s energy and electricity supplies, Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng said on Tuesday, sending a signal that the nation will secure energy supplies in the process of achieving the carbon emissions targets.
The clean and efficient use of coal is a vital path to achieving the country's carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, calling for moves to advance a green transition of energy in a scientific and orderly manner, Han said while presiding over a meeting promoting the clean and efficient use of coal.
China should focus on key fields and sectors and advance energy conservation and carbon reduction retrofits in coal-intensive industries, he added.
The vice premier also called for efforts to popularise advanced energy conservation technologies and achieve breakthroughs in core technologies in this field, while scaling up financial supports for clean coal.
The top economic planner on Tuesday issued the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) for a modern energy system, in which it outlined clear targets for annual energy supply capacity while specifying measures to enhance the country's energy independence. The government plan highlighted the targets by 2025 for the annual production capacity of 4.6 billion tons of standard coal, 200 million tons of crude oil, 230 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and about 3 billion kilowatts of the total installed capacity for power generation.
